Gulls:  This is a type of bird that is a seabird that originates from the West Coast of North America.  However, the gull population has been increasing and spreading in North America.

Gulls are nuisances to human recreational and drinking areas, landfills, industrial wastelands, and airfields.  Gulls are accustomed to humans so they are likely to congregate in areas visited by humans thus threatening human safety. For example, gulls will roost near the reservoirs and their droppings can contaminate the drinking water and transmit diseases to human populations.  In addition, gulls will collide with aircraft leading to potential aircraft damage and human injuries for air travel.

Gulls are common in beaches, marinas, drinking water reservoirs, landfills, parking lots, light fixtures, airfields, military bases, and agricultural livestock feed operations.

Turkey Vultures:  This is a type of bird that resides across the United States.  Turkey vultures are scavengers that eat dead animals.  This bird is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty so non-killing methods are used to control this type of bird problem.

Turkey vultures are nuisance birds because they are very noisy and aggressive birds. They can attack building structural components such as caulking, shingles, siding leading to building damage.  The turkey vultures' droppings can accumulate significantly leading to health risks among humans.

Turkey vultures are common in agricultural, rural, urban, and residential areas.

Nuisance birds are birds that can congregate in enormous populations to nest and roost in urbanized, industrial, agricultural, and residential areas. These birds are nuisances because their habits can lead to health issues for humans and livestock as well as building, machinery, and transportation hazard issues. The following are examples of health and safety issues caused by nuisance birds that can lead to serious human and livestock health issues and financial damage:

  • the birds eat the feed or supplements fed to livestock;
  • the birds can transfer disease between agricultural facilities;
  • the birds eat and ruin the harvested fruits at a vineyard;
  • the birds defecate on or inside the urban business, industrial, and agricultural buildings as well as on homes;
  • the birds' droppings pose a health risk by its filth and odor and can lead to histoplasmosis affecting the lungs and eventually blindness in humans.
  • the birds' droppings can lead to water damage by backing up the pipes in buildings; and
  • the birds can pose noise control issues as well as flocking and interfering with the flow of transportation such being caught in the jets of airplanes resulting in damage and human injuries.

Different species of nuisance birds are sometimes protected by the federal government.  Nuisance birds are the following:  starlings, pigeons, sparrows, gulls, crows, and turkey vultures.  Avian Engineers have engineered and effective solutions to address the bird control issues no matter the size and scope they are.

Crows:  This is a type of bird with two species found in North America.  The large common crow is across North America while the smaller fish crow is in the Southeast.  Crows are very intelligent and social birds with the ability to communicate among each other.

Crows are nuisances to agricultural areas due to their affinity for corn and farm crops.  Crows can flock in numerous numbers in trees leading to noise and harassment concerns for humans in agricultural and residential areas.  Crows' droppings can lead to building damage and disease concerns among humans.

Crows are common in metropolitan areas, landfills, lawns, athletic fields, parking lots, livestock feed operations, and farming fields.

Starlings:  This type of bird is the very common and obnoxious nuisance bird in North America after being introduced to this continent. It is believed by the United States Department of Agriculture that the starling population is 1 billion.

Starlings are nuisances to urban and rural areas because of their congregating, eating, and lifestyle habits.  Starlings can live with black birds and cow birds to avoid predators. These birds can be very noisy and these birds' droppings on the produce, feed, livestock, and buildings can lead to health and safety concerns and devastating financial losses.  For example, a flock of 5,000 starlings can devour and damage a vineyard's produce within a week leading to startling financial losses.  The starlings' droppings can cause corrosive damage to buildings and cause slippery conditions around the buildings and stairs.  Further, the starlings' droppings's filth and odor can lead to health and safety concerns for the employees.

Starlings are common in the agricultural and industrial areas as well as vineyards.

Barn Swallow: This type of bird are common across North America.  They are cliff dwellers and feed primarily on insects.  Barn swallows are protected under Migratory Bird Treaty and once the nests are occupied there are not to be disturbed. The birds are very protective of their territory and will dive bomb anything that ventures into the area.

Swallows are in the nuisance category because they build nests in structures and their droppings  heavily decorate the walls and ground below. The well known mud nests also house a way for parasites to enter the home or workplace through cracks in the walls or soffits.
Barn swallows are common in suburban,industrial,and rural settings.

 Nuisance Birds

Pigeons:  This type of bird is a nuisance bird spread across North America after being introduced to this continent.  Pigeons are very adaptable to any climate and environment and can breed during the year to raise 6 pairs of young.  Also, the pigeons' nests can contain mites, ticks, fleas, and lice leading to biting insect issues for humans and livestock.

Pigeons are nuisances to urban and agricultural areas.  A pigeon can defecate 25 pounds of feces annually, which is very corrosive leading to building damage and livestock feed contamination. Roof and gutter damage is common for building damage from the pigeon droppings.  Further, pigeons can carry and spread diseases to people and livestock by their odorous droppings such as encephalitis and histoplasmosis.

Pigeons are common in the urban areas, commercial feed and livestock operations, and airplane facilities.

Canada Geese:  This is a type of bird that is across the North America.  Canada Geese is a migratory bird and like to congregate around a water source.

Canada Geese are nuisances to urban, commercial, industrial, and residential areas especially with a lake or pond. Canada Geese are noisy and can harass people, eat and defecate the grass and damage the property.

Canada Geese are common in areas near lakes, ponds, reservoirs, streams, or creeks. They also take up residence in housing developments, business complexes and golf courses.

Sparrows:  This type of bird is the most populated species in North America.  Sparrows can breed during the year raising 4-7 offspring per clutch and are likely to congregate in crops.

Sparrows are nuisances to urban, industrial, agricultural, and residential areas.  The sparrows' bacterial and odorous droppings, feathers, nests can lead to various issues such as clogging up pipes and gutters causing water damage, causing fire hazards, contaminating livestock feed, produce, and grain.

Sparrows are common in the urban areas especially the manufacturing and food processing plants, commercial areas such as stores and warehouses as well as vineyards.
